Darky humorous Gothic Country

I first came across the odd pairing of Brett and Rennie Sparks on a late night BBC2 program about the deep south in the USA called In Search of the One Eyed Jesus which actually is still available on iPlayer.

Unconventional in appearance and sound this Gothic Country/Americana duo just tickle my sense of humour especially with their dark song 'Bottomless Hole' or the 'Song of a Hundred Toads'. Brett's sombre downbeat but beautiful voice is something quite different. A bit like Leonard Cohen but more tongue in cheek. This is one of four HF album I own and I think the best. 13 songs on this album are simply constructed never over-produced or overly earness. Often they are about nature or oddities of nature and feature just Brett singing with his guitar sometimes with Rennie on percussion. Every track on this album is a winner. Seen them in concert since the Loppylugs meeting and ever exceeded my high expectations. First class

Not my usual style or comfort zone but I was strangely taken by this. Captivating vocals and instrumentation, very powerful and invigourating, with plenty of atmosphere. Not your usual country snooze-fest.
