Reality don’t fool me

There is a stronger avant-grade left-field vibe on this album than on their other ones, perhaps it's not surprising as that really is the heritage of electronic music at this point, there is no such thing as electro pop, they are one of the prime drivers in bringing that about. There is also a slight DIY feel too, which gets smoothed off on their other slicker, more pop-oriented albums. But their song-writing skills still come though, as they do throughout their careers. Clever arrangements, good sing-a-long pop tunes, changes in mix but with a strong clear unified approach in the sound.

There is that sort of typical new wave / new romantic surreal disconnected feel in some of the lyrics, which I find kind of corny and kind of interesting in equal measure. They try some weirder stuff towards the end that doesn't quite come off but I think it is the darker, strange edge that makes this an interesting album.

OMD fans are just a little bit odd

Definitely an acquired taste this lot. They were just a few years before my time when I was busy with the likes of Duran Duran and Madonna, and the only people who liked OMD at my school were strange people. I can see why now. Clever stuff though and increasingly enjoyable when you put the effort in.
